Biography

He was born in Ravenna, he received the master degree cum laude from the University of Bologna, Italy, on June 2002. In December 2003 he started his Ph.D. studies at DEIS-University of Bologna and in April-2006 he received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering. Loris Nanni was a Post PhD fellow (from 2006 to 2011) at DEIS (department of Computer Engineering) - of University of Bologna. In December-2010 he won a position as Associate Researcher (ricercatore a tempo indeterminato) at the Department of Information Engineering - University of Padua (Padova). He is interested in: Bioinformatics; Biometric Systems; Multi-classifier systems; Image Database.

Research interests

Biometric System

Biometric Systems are automated methods for verifying or recognizing the identity of a living person on the basis of some physiological characteristics, like a fingerprint or iris pattern, or some aspects of behaviour, like handwriting or keystroke patterns.

Bioinformatics

Biological science is an "understanding" and "explanation" discipline. There are few axioms or mathematical formulae to model biological systems. Biological systems are highly complex and the only way to understand these systems is by doing experiments. Thus, biological research is data driven research. Current biological databases are populated by vast amounts of experimental data. Human experts are unable to cope with this fast growing trend, and require some automatic yet intelligent approaches to assist them to extract the useful biological information underlying these databases. Machine learning is one such approach which has been widely applied to bioinformatics and has gained a lot of success in this research area. Machine learning algorithms have been widely applied in knowledge discovery process.

Image Database

An image database (IDB) is a system in which a large amount of image data and their related information are integratedly stored and managed. Major objectives of an IDB are efficient storage, powerful retrieval capability, flexible data manipulation, efficient indexing..
